Background:
The Business Integration Converter (BIC) and related enterprise components provide the data transformation engine at the heart of the Business Integration Server (BIS). They allow seamless transformation of electronic documents by enabling end users to concentrate on solving business problems rather than technical details of data representation. BIC supports all presently used data formats in the field of EDI and B2B including EDIFACT, ANSI X 12, TRADACOM, XML etc. and various high-level document exchange standards based on these formats.
The BIC team has designed a high-level data transformation language (BIC Basic) that is used to write transformation programs (mappings). They have also created an integrated development environment (BIC Mapping Designer - BIC MD) for mapping creation and management.
Both BIC, BIC MD, and the additional server components that accompany them are considerable in terms of sheer code size and complexity. They are integrated into the Seeburger server product line, and also in SAP XI, which presents a challenge to BIC developers to be proficient in a host of J2SE/J2EE technologies and APIs, ranging from Swing GUIs, to EJBs, communications etc.
